2k8 AD from 2k AD
Morning,
I'm reading lots of documentation regarding this online here : http://technet2.microsoft.com/window....mspx?mfr=true There's some information I can't find though regarding the upgrade process from win2k. Is it possible to introduce a windows 2008 server into a 2000 AD domain, then run the adprep process from the 2k8 server and take to domain straight for 2k AD to 2k8 AD? Do you HAVE TO go to 2k3 first from 2k? Can 2k and 2k8 DC's happily live together in mixed mode until all 2k DC's are either retired or updraded? |

Hello Andrew,
Install it as a member server, upgrade the schema with adprep command from the 2008 disk and then run dcpromo. Re: 2k8 AD from 2k AD
Hi All,
I have similar situation. In our single forest and single domain network, all DCs are W2K with some W2K3 member servers. After reading above messages, I'm going to add a W2K8 server to join the domain as a member server (new hardware) first, then promot it to a DC. And also move the primary roles from a W2K DC to this new W2K8 DC. Next step is to promot a couple of W2K3 member servers to DC as well and then to retire all old W2K DCs because the hardware is too old. Is this upgrad path OK? Please advice, Thanks Roger "Jorge de Almeida Pinto [MVP - DS]" wrote: > > There's some information I can't find though regarding the upgrade process > > from win2k. > > Is it possible to introduce a windows 2008 server into a 2000 AD domain, > > then run the adprep process from the 2k8 server and take to domain > > straight for 2k AD to 2k8 AD? > > Yes. Re: 2k8 AD from 2k AD
that should be OK
you need at least: ADPREP /FORESTPREP ADPREP /DOMAINPREP /GPPREP ADPREP /RODCPREP the last one is not really required if you do not use RODCs, but it does not hurt either! for the upgrade have a look at: http://blogs.dirteam.com/blogs/jorge...2K3_3F00_.aspx (especially if you have exchange 2000) -- Cheers, (HOPEFULLY THIS INFORMATION HELPS YOU!) # Jorge de Almeida Pinto # MVP Identity & Access - Directory Services # BLOG (WEB-BASED)--> http://blogs.dirteam.com/blogs/jorge/default.aspx BLOG (RSS-FEEDS)--> http://blogs.dirteam.com/blogs/jorge/rss.aspx ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ * How to ask a question --> http://support.microsoft.com/?id=555375 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ * This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties and confers no rights! * Always test ANY suggestion in a test environment before implementing! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ################################################# ################################################# ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "RQ" <RQ@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news CB4B4CC-DD2F-4012-9A68-A2AEFA5C09FC@microsoft.com...> Hi All, > I have similar situation. Hello rq,
Before, on the schema master of the domain, normally the first installed dc, find it out with "netdom query fsmo" form the command line, if you have the support tools from the 2003 install disk installed.
