Permissions Problem

Here is the issue: We have hired a new Systems Administrator. In Active
Directory we copied the account of our Network Admin. The new guy can remote
the servers and can make changes to the system. He can remote a server and
add user accounts ect… But he needed to install a program on a server from
the file server. He followed the UNC path to the program on the file server
and tried to start the install. He got an error message that reads, “Windows
cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the
appropriate permissions to access the item.” So to rule out the permissions
conflict issue we had the Network Admin try and she could do the install.
Their permissions are exactly the same. So we blew away the account of the
Systems Admin and rebuilt it from scratch, not coping it. Same thing. Still
can’t do an install. We then backed out the most recent updates to the file
server. Still no dice. We built a new test admin account. Same problem
with it. We took all it’s permissions away and added them back one at a time
and took them away one at a time in a different order. We did that to look
for conflicts. Still nothing. Anyone run into this before? Anyone have any
ideas?

Re: Permissions Problem

Hi
Sounds permissions problem. If you copy the files to the local server does
it work running the setup locally?

Re: Permissions Problem

If the files were downloaded from a disk or from the internet yes. But if
they come from the file server no. We moved a copy to the desktop and still
had the same issue.

Re: Permissions Problem

It should work locally unless something is blocking the access to the file
(antivirus or any other protection mechanism)
try this:

Re: Permissions Problem

Yes, we saw that one and I did unblock uet to no availe. Intersting to
note... The older accounts were able in install dispite this button. I would
think this issue would have effected them as well.

Re: Permissions Problem

Strange because you should be able to run it locally without problems
assuming that you have the proper rights to run the setup!!!

If you dissable de advance security under add remove programs does it solve
the problem?

Re: Permissions Problem

Yes, that did fix it... but why would that make a differance for a new admin
account and not an old admin account?

Re: Permissions Problem

I don't have a machine to check that know, but IIRC it has to do it security
policies that are changed when that option is selected.
