| Guest Posts: n/a | Re: sound problem Hope this isn't hijacking but seeing as the OP never came back.... I reformated & loaded a new Windows XP for a friend who got a nasty virus which couldn't be solved by reloading her crappy partioned OEM version. Her PC is based on a Gigabyte K8VM800M board & I loaded all the available drivers. The result is the precise same problem as the OP; no sound for streamed video & audio in a browser and no Windows App sounds. I tried playing the Application sounds from the Sounds tab in Sounds & Audio & received the message "Windows cannot play the sound %SystemRoot%\media\Widows XP startup.wav. Your sound card may be in use". I G**gled this message & only got one hit - posted to another help forum which got no reply. The wav files play fine in MediaPlayer. Similarly, streamed audio opened in the browser from Media Player also plays fine as does the "Welcome" and "You have mail" messages when logging into an A*L account from the same brower. On the other hand, the lack of audio from eg You Tube videos or embedded audio players such as in MySpace is the same in every browser I've tried. I tried uninstalling / reinstalling the hardware but no good. I did think it might be registry errors, but I don't know why this would affect these separate audio functions. If I can't come up with anything else I may have to try reloading from scratch again but my friend has no patience & (only half-jokingly) threatened to throw it out of the window of her 2nd floor flat. Any help much appreciated. Ian |

| Guest Posts: n/a | Re: sound problem In case anyone's interested, I've finally managed to solve this. ![]() It is normally known as "No Audio Device" which is the information given on the Volume Tab (on which all options were greyed out) in _Sound_&_Audio_Properties_ from Control Panel. It seems XP has a strange habit of sometimes assigning Sound Playback and Sound Recording functions to the modem instead of the sound card. Modems can only handle a small subset of sounds and the remainder either don't work, eg Windows Events or embedded streamed files, or use the defaults of the programme running them, eg in a Media Player which is already running through the sound card. The big give-away is that you hear the Modem dial-up & connection sounds through your speakers instead of from the back of the PC. Problem is, how many of use a dial-up connection nowadays? Reloading XP can fix this but it might simply reproduce the problem - it seems pretty random. To fix, open _Sound_&_Audio_Properties_ from Control Panel, go to Audio tab and in the fields mentioned above, choose the appropriate sound device from the drop-down menu. Click on Accept and the options on the Volume tab should now be active. |
