i can't update STEAM after installation - please help

i just bought a brand new computer with windows vista home premium and
Counter Strike Source, installed it and when i run it, it starts
updating and at about 25% the following message appears:

Debug Assertion Failed

Program: C:/Program Files/Steam/Steam.exe
File: /p4clients/rel_beta/Projects/Common/Misc/Win32Registry.cpp
Line: 447
bCloseRet == 0L
(Press Retry to Debug the Application - JIT debugging must be enabled)

What is JIT? How can I enable it?

JIT I believe is a Java thing which Steam may use as part of it's codebase,
unless you know how to code in java, (or more specifically you know how to
Debug Code), then you can probably ignore this message.

What you have is a crash of some sort, seems like Steam is crashing, only
thing I could suggest is to go to http://www.steampowered.com and download
the latest version of the Steam Client. Run the setup, it should replace
whatever you have installed now with whatever version is on their website.

Try Steam again, see if it works.

If that fails, you could try removing the Counter Strike files and download
them again. Right Click on the entry for Counter Strike and select Delete
Local Content...

I'd only do that as a last resort, may not be the files being updated, could
be something else.

best a luck,
A.

Also make sure you have the latest version of J-Initiator installed which I
believe what JIT is referring to

Steam won't run if it's already running, look for the Team icon in your
system tray, right click and choose Exit to quit out of Steam, then you can
run it again from the shortcut in your start menu.

You might try running Steam a few times as Administrator (Right click,
choose Run As Admin), that'll make sure any updates get properly installed.

Don't know what else to suggest other than to check out the forums at
steamcommunities.com

I went to GOOGLE and entered "can only run one copy of steam", and the
second link took me to a recent forum discussion on the forums at
SteamPowered.com.

One user said this:

Had the same problem, looked around a bit and found a solution that worked
for me. Go to the steam folder and find the steam.exe file and right click
and go to properties. Click the compatibility tab and if its on (For windows
XP or anything else) turn it off then hit ok and try running. Fixed it for
me maybe it'll work 4 u.

Another post on gamespot.com:

Been Having the Same Hassle with my Steam account !!

try to start, it say's updating, then at 26% it stopped with same result as
You
I am Using Win XP, had a look at Other Forum's and came across this answer

Delete your " clientregistry.blob " in yourSteam Folder, and it worked !!!!

It still went up to 26% then hesitated, then just carried on updating to
100%
you have to sign into your Steam account again...and once you've done that

FIRE IN THE HOLE !!

Basically it sounds like from the many messages I found from Google that if
you delete your steam files and run Steam.EXE or the SteamInstaller it'll
patch with the latest Vista Happy files and you should be good to go.

Try this:
1. Reboot
2. Open the C:\Program Files\Steam folder
3. Delete all files except for Steam.EXE and do NOT delete any folders.
4. Run Steam.EXE (just double-click on it)

When steam doesn't see you have any of the system files it'll simply
download them again.

If that fails, delete Steam.exe as well, then go to steampowered.com, and
click download and install steam. Run the SteamInstaller.MSI file you get to
re-install everything. Did it just now, worked just fine, and the steam you
download is probably better tested with Vista than if you install it from a
game CD.
