Moving Document folder (pictures folder) etc to a network drive
Hello.
I'm a system administrator who is evaluating Vista for the first time to see if it is worth deploying across our company. We need new machines, and I would like to take advantage of the newest technology. This is very peculiar behavior that I have encountered when trying to change the location of the "Documents" folder on windows Vista to a network drive: I will preface this by saying that under XP this was quite simple. I moved the My Documents folder to a mapped drive and everything worked seamlessly. Its much easier to make backups from a network drive. I'm not fond of any syncing software or scenarios. So Here it is: When I attempted to change the location of the "Documents folder, it did a couple of things: 1. Instead of moving the "Documents" folder, it simply created a new shortcut to the mapped drive. 2. Changed the name of the shortcut item from Documents from the start menu So now I have this folder listing: -Jereviscious 1.Jviscious (the network folder) 2.Documents. -If I click on the "Documents" folder properties now, there is no option to change the location. It is permanently locked on the C drive. -I cannot delete the "Documents" folder and rename the "Jviscious" folder to Documents. -I can reset the "Jviscious" folder back to the original location and it (Jviscious) will disappear, and I can access the location property of the "Documents" folder once again. I would like to use the convention that microsoft has built here so that users will keep their files organized, but If I can't work around this problem, I will simply place a shortcut to the network drive and rename it to "My Documents" I apologize if this posting is unclear. I will attempt to clarify if anyone has any further questions. Thank You |
