Corrupt/Missing Icons
Many icons are invalid or missing.
In Explorer, the icons for: Computer Public Floppy Disk Drive (A ![]() (D ![]() (G ![]() (S ![]() are all the Windows default icon. Random folders have the default icon, but only with "small" icon views. "Medium Icon", "Large Icon" and "Extra Large" views all have the proper folder icon. In my home folder, all special folders have their expected special teal folder, except "Documents", which has the default icon (under all views/sizes). i've deleted the IconCache.db file in: c:\Users\Ian\AppData\Local\IconCache.db and rebooted. That fixed folders from all looking like recycle bins, to all having the default icon. No IconCache.db file has been recreated by Windows. i created a test administrative account - its icons are broken, and it has no IconCache.db file. i assume there's another IconCache file that is central to all users. i've ensured that my Documents folder has a properly attributed desktop.ini file, with the proper contents. i've tried to "Customize" the view of my Documents folder. i've tried to restore the default icon of folders, Explorer crashes and restarts itself. i've tried to customize the view of folders where the folder icon won't appear, Explorer crashes and restarts itself. Many many times, if i try to open or save a file from a program (Notepad, Wordpad, Word 2007, 3rd party program), and that program brings up the standard Open or Save dialog, the application will hang indefinetly. Googling leads to hundreds of other people with this same problem, with no solutions, save the melonheads who suggest: - run sfc /scannow - restore to a system checkpoint - reinstall Windows i want actual answers; VPN to my network and break into Explorer with a debugger if you have to. |

Still no answers, but see
http://tinyurl.com/2nuktq for the probably cause, and no solution. Excuse typos. It's late, i'm tired, and i don't see an option to edit my posts. Or list my posts. Or make these windows bigger. |

RE: Corrupt/Missing Icons
I put in another post to go to Stardock.com and download the Icon Packager
program (it is $14.95 stand-alone) I had the exact same problem with my Start menu/program folders corrupt. The icons in My Computer as you mention, The Fonts folder in Control Panel, etc.. The Icon Packager program fixed the whole problem as you can change your whole system icons if you want. This was the ONLY fix I could find so far to repair all the corrupted icons, etc. "Jack Tripper" wrote: > Still no answers, but see > http://tinyurl.com/2nuktq > for the probably cause, and no solution. > > > "Jack Tripper" wrote: > > > Many icons are invalid or missing. > > > > In Explorer, the icons for: > > Computer > > Public > > Floppy Disk Drive (A ![]() > > (D ![]() > > (G ![]() > > (S ![]() > > are all the Windows default icon. > > > > Random folders have the default icon, but only with "small" icon views. > > "Medium Icon", "Large Icon" and "Extra Large" views all have the proper > > folder icon. > > > > In my home folder, all special folders have their expected special teal > > folder, except "Documents", which has the default icon (under all > > views/sizes). > > > > > > i've deleted the IconCache.db file in: > > c:\Users\Ian\AppData\Local\IconCache.db > > and rebooted. You can't edit a post that has been submitted. I recommend though, that you use a newsreader to access what are actually Usenet newsgroups instead of the awful web interface. Vista comes with Windows Mail which is already set up for MS newsgroup access under Microsoft Communities. Outlook Express in XP can be similarly configured. Here is a link on how to do that. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/ou...snewreader.htm -- Rock [MS-MVP User/Shell] |

RE: Corrupt/Missing Icons
The solution is to delete the registry folder
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Shell Icons The uninstaller blanks out the values, rather than deleting them. A clean install of Vista doesn't have the "Shell Icons" folder.
