Can't use my keyboard in Safe Mode - Windows 98

For some reason my computer is automatically starting in Safe Mode. The
keyboard is not responding in this mode, I can only use the mouse. When I
try troubleshooting from the Start/Help menu nothing happens! I am running
out of ideas!

If you're really running Win98 you're in the wrong forum.

If your system is automatically booting in safe mode it's pretty mixed
up. Doesn't it pause on bootup to let you choose safe mode or normal?
If not your Win is really messed up and you need someone to sit down
with it and work on it. If it's a WIn98 system that probably isn't
worth it.

If your keyboard is fully dead, if you're lucky it's the keyboard.
Borrow one and try it.

If your system won't talk to any keyboard and it's WIn98 it's not
worth fixing.

When you first boot, that very first instant of something on the
screen, you should be able to press F1 or F2 or F10 or Del or
something and go into bios. Do that and just look around in bios
without changing anything and you'll know if you keyboard is working.
For that matter you can also hit Pause during those first few seconds
and booting should pause. Hit Enter to continue.

Re: Can't use my keyboard in Safe Mode - Windows 98

Thanks for the good news...I know I'm in the wrong forum but this is where I
ended up when I searched "troubleshooting windows 98" on the windows help
website...

But no matter -I appreciate all comments. I know its not the keyboard
because my keyboard works fine when connected to my lap top.

I agree windows 98 isn't worth saving but would like to get the system
operating enough to clean off my hard drive of saved docs, pictures, and
such. Since my keyboard is not responding I can't do any of the things you
suggested such as hitting pause, F1, F10, etc.

Any other suggestions out there?

If the keyboard is USB try using a PS/2 keyboard or a PS/2 converter
with the USB keyboard.

Save yourself the hastle
Go to newegg.com.
Purchase an IDE->USB adapter.
Remove the hard drive from the Win98 machine and connect
it to the adpater
Get your new computer, and plug the USB adapter into a
USB connection.
Copy your documents and pictures from the new
"external" drive.

Here is a portal to the MS newsgroups on the web.
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...s/default.aspx

Scroll down the left side to the microsoft.public.windows98 group, expand it
and you'll see the newsgroups for windows 98. Post to the
microsoft.public.win98.gen.discussion one.

Are you using a USB Keyboard? Safe Mode loads fewer device drivers,
and USB wouldn't be supported. Try using a PS/2 keyboard.

It won't, inless the keyboard was originally designed to use the
adapter. Does the keyboard say that it's USB-PS/2 Compatible?
