Monitor turning off while playing video

This problem happens in Vista, not XP.

What is the fix for Vista?

Re: Monitor turning off while playing video

Could you explain this? Do you mean as in the screen saver or hibernate
mode kicks in even though video is playing?

Yes, Monitor goes into Standby whilst video is playing in the foreground.

Re: Monitor turning off while playing video

And I assume it's shutting off in compliance with your power savings
options, right?

In some cases WMP doesn't have permission/privileges to override that
setting. I do not recall the source of that issue - I *think* it can happen
if someone acting as administrator sets that setting, since WMP will run as
a normal user.

Re: Monitor turning off while playing video

Yes the monitor goes off in accordance with Power saving scheme.

OK what should I be doing.. I should run the programme in question as
Administrator. I am the Admin on the machine.

Re: Monitor turning off while playing video

Are you logged in *as* the Administrator account, or another user account
that admin privileges? Do you have UAC turned on (the prompts for admin
credentials)?

It's possible that the power savings control panel was opened as an
administrator, but Windows Media Player is asking for a lower privilege set
and thus is unable to override those "administrative" power settings. Given
that WMP will need to turn off the power settings in real time as it runs,
but that the Power Settings would be running with the full Explorer rights
(IIRC), if you're really running the machine as Administrator all the time
you may have a square peg/round hole problem.

This is all a lot of deduction. Let's step back: are you logged in as
"Administrator"?

Does this work if you log in as a new/normal user account and aren't running
as the administrator?
