Dear Friend,
THANKS a million for taking the time, and I did not write back because I had
not checked my Email.
Being the TECH-IMBECILE that I am I tried to follow your advice, but when I
got to the display monitor the LIST BOX WAS blank already.
It's only when I checked "all profiles" that I found quite a number of
these, under these headings:
WCS device profile
WCS viewing condition profiles
WCS GAMUT ----- profiles
ICC profiles......
As imagined, this is all bewildering to me.
Do I erase any of these?
When I tried to erase one at random there was a strong warning.

Ray,
When you are in the all-profiles tab you can actually delete profiles from
your system, probably not a good idea, hence the system warnings.

When you are in the devices tab, then you are simply using/not using the
profiles, they do not get deleted from the system so it is easy to try out
profiles. So, no do not delete profiles from the all profiles tab.

Only other hint I can suggest is the 'advanced tab'. On my system all of the
entries here are the 'default' ones. If you have any that are not 'System
default...........' I suggest you make note of what they are set to and
change to the system default value in the drop down list.

The whole concept if ICC and gamuts etc is way over me, so I leave
everything as default! People who deal with graphics and color for printing
and professional photo businesses for instance can use these profiles to
tweak their equipment so what they see is what the get printed. But for most
of use 'what you see is very similar to what you print' is good enough.

I am not sure if you need to reboot for changes here to take effect, but
wouldn't hurt.

Another thing is that these color settings are on a per user account basis.
If you have another user account on your machine check to see if that
account also has the problem.

THANKS for such a prompt response!
Alas, the "default" settings you so helpfully suggest I tweak are already as
such. I think I'm going to call Dell (my computer--- perhaps the REAL
problem?...) and get on the phone for an hour with India--- which I hate (no
xenophobia here)-----
