Re: DVD Format info please

A dvr-ms file consist of the actual video file which is in standard MPEG2
DVD format and have a wrapper or header records that contain the dvr-ms
information for Media Center.
This is apparent since all of the decoder programs compatible with Media
Center are in fact the ones developed to support DVD software and the work
fine since the Media Center strips off the wrapper of the dvr-ms file and
passé the remainder to the DVD decoder.
There are programs available that remover the dvr-ms wrapper quickly and
change the file type suffix when "conversion" is desired.

Re: DVD Format info please

Thanks again, PapaJohn:

Any thoughts on how different DVD makers compare, like Windows DVDMaker,
Roxio, Nero? Others?

Also, I don't see how to make a menu with words with Windows DVD, I just see
mini-video screens

Re: DVD Format info please

Bill, here's a sketchy summary of DVD making software from my perspective.

DVD Maker doesn't support text on menu thumbnails... I love the app but
have issues at times producing discs, maybe because I'm running the latest
pre-released version of Vista Ultimate.

I use Roxio MyDVD but don't recommend it... when issues happen and they do,
you typically can't resolve them or get support.

I've tried and liked Adobe Premiere Elements and Sony Vegas Movie Studio....
but don't own Premere Elements, and haven't used Vegas since making the
first test DVD.

Ulead and Nero software have good posting vibes from many users, but I
haven't tried them.

I don't make a lot of DVDs, and the ones I make are not complex in terms of
chaptering. When I have an issue with one app, I'll quickly switch to
anohter one to get the job done rather than trying to resolve the issue.

Thanks for the update, John, and the link.

WMV-HD is, I guess, where my interests lie.

Fascinating stuff on a great site

Re: DVD Format info please

The importance is in the encoder, as a poor encoder will make a hash of
converting your video.
A cheap but good dvd authoring tool is Ulead movie factory, a good one, but
so hard to learn is dvdlabs. This doesn't do any encoding, so you would need
one, but a cheap good one is tmpgenc and a good expensive one is canopus
procoder
