The talktalk.net instructions for setting up to use their email servers
are at:

http://www.talktalkmembers.com/content/view/67/68/

They don't seem to have written instructions for Windows Mail yet,
so use their instructions for Outlook Express but under Windows
Mail instead.

Your settings look fine. Which antivirus are you running?

Re: Intermittent Probs

Hi Garry

Many thanks for replying - my delay in coming back again is because I can't
now get Win Mail to send to Newsgroups (I am sending this message using my
old Win XP Pc). Anyway ...

On my Win Vista Pc I'm using McAfee.

Had another mail failure just now: the error message was:-
"An unknown error has occurred. Protocol SMTP, Port 0, Secure(SSL): No
Error Number: 0x800C0148"

By the way, my probs are with both TalkTalk and OneAndOne servers (i.e. I
have accounts on both)

Cheers
John

Re: Intermittent Probs

Error messages referring to port 0 are usually due to an antivirus program
interfering so much that Windows Mail is unable to look up the port
number.

McAfee is one of the antivirus programs for which most versions
cause assorted problems in Windows Mail, although seldom
immediately. To stop it from creating new problems , you have to
uninstal it, not just disable it.

You should then run this cleanup program:

<http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee& type=TS&ia=1>

You may even have to delete the email account under Windows
Mail, then restart Windows Mail, then create the email account again.

Most versions of the Norton antivirus program and a recent version
of the Trend antivirus program also cause such problems, so don't
use them as a replacement.

If this stops the problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program. I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with
a custom install that tells it to leave out the part that scans email.
