Vista Sp1 Update

Hi
I Have Vista SP1 installed for about 8 weeks now ..and have had no problems
till 2 days ago.
The Vista Update just opens a window but nothing really happens..it never
shows what has updated..and what is available for updates.
The Little timer just goes round and round..I have let it sit for 4 hours
and the same..nothing changed.
It cannot be closed except thru task manager which then opens the look for a
solution box....never finds one...then proceeds to reset Windows
Explorer...Aero shuts down...Screen hiccups for 1/10 of a second...Aero
comes back....
The same thing happens with Defender when I try to manually update...it says
its searching but even after 3 hours its still searching.
I have shut off the ZA Pro Firewall..but that changed nothing..
anybody got any ideas about what is going on and what I could do to
troubleshoot/solve this problem??
