video thumbnail view

Hi, I have Vista home premium and used to have a thumbnail view of AVI and
Mpeg files but now haven't, for some unknown reason they disappeared and now
I only have the icons. How do I get thumbnails back? I have no trouble
with JPEG or bitmap thumbnails. Thanks

No guarantees...but try this,
maybe it will restore the thumbs:

Go to...Start / Run and type
(or copy/paste):

"regsvr32 shmedia.dll"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

A dialog box should report the following:

"DllRegisterServer in shmedia.dll succeeded"

Re: video thumbnail view

I think that shmedia.dll is in WinXP but not Vista. I too cannot see video
thumbnails or previews in Vista's Windows Explorer (SP1) Business Edition 32,
however I CAN see video thumbnails (mpg, wmv, avi, and mov) in Irfan
thumbnail viewer. It appears to build the thumbnails on the fly, rather than
load existing thumbs (I could be wrong about this). But these Irfan generated
thumbnails are not accessed by Explorer. - Phil

Re: video thumbnail view

When did this first break?
What's one particular file type you want this working for?

Re: video thumbnail view

Hi Zachd,

I don't know the date when WinExplorer first stopped showing video thumbs &
previews, but it's been in the weeks-to-months range. I've periodically
searched for a solution and, although I didn't find one, I noticed that there
have been similar comments in/on various forums and sites. The only "new"
info I added was that IrfanView does show video thumbs, albeit only to a max
of 100 video 'MRUDs', but it does do so for mpeg, wmv, avi, and mov files.
(The only kinds I checked.) Also, I didn't mention this, but the old program
Firehand Ember shows thumbs for mpegs, but not wmvs (I didn't check others).
Finally, Explorer DOES show thumbs and previews for jpeg and other image
files. I don't know if any of this helps explain why Explorer won't show them.
My system info is: Vista 32 Business SP1 running on a Lenovo Thinkpad T60
[2 CPUs T7200 2.00GHz; 100 GB HD; approx. 38 GB free; ATI Mobility Radeon
1400 (128 MB RAM)]. All available updates from Microsoft and Lenovo are
installed and the BIOS is up to date. No viruses, spyware, or malware appear
to be running.
Thanks, Phil

Re: video thumbnail view

Hi, I have them back now and I think it's because I downloaded a fix that I
found on this page. It seemed to be a common thing reading the forums and I
got this page from one of them.

it's handy to know if anyone else has the same problem.
Thanks Ramesh you have helped me before when I had all but given up.

Re: video thumbnail view

Thanks Maeve I'll look at the files and give them a shot. (I prefer not
running scripts that modify the registry unless I know the source, but if
they look okay I'll run them.) Thanks, Phil
