Playing mp4 and divx avi files with Vista Media Center

How can I play mp4 and avi file in Windows Vista Media Center. I am running
Vista Premium.

I can see AVIs in the library, but can't play them. I can't even see the MP4
files in the library. Both play with media center.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Playing mp4 and divx avi files with Vista Media Center

there is a vista codec pack that is swimming around in the internet..

I normally say NO to codec packs.. but media center is the only reason I
would tell someone to install it..

see here:

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...Codec_Pack.htm

if you are NOT using media center kiss all the codec problems bye bye and
install and use
the www.gomplayer.com that has all codecs built in and is FANTASTIC!

Thanks. I assume standard edition? will this allow the mp4s to appear in the
WMC library?

All you do to play .mp4 in MCE is to rename the file extension to .avi

Open up a folder and go to tools/folder options/view. then uncehck the "hide extensions for known file types" box. This will allow you to change the file extension of any file.

mp4 is quicktime, Media Center uses Windows Media Player as it's default player. Download a codec pack like FFDshow and you should be able to play pretty much anything you want in MCE.

I use MCE to play all my HD .mkv files as well.
