Memory Upgrade on PC with Dual Core Processor

Hello,

I have an HP Media Center with Vista Premium 32 bits
The processor is AMD Athlon 64 x 2 Dual Core
I have 2 x 512 Mb of Ram

I've read somewhere that in case of upgrade, we must do it by installing
2 pairs of Memory Modules of same value with a Dual Core Processor.

Can somebody explain me why ?
Is this absolutely necessary ?

(I find that my PC with Vista is running too slow with 1 Giga)

Many Thanks

Re: Memory Upgrade on PC with Dual Core Processor

This would be something I would contact HP about. I haven't heard anything
about having to pair RAM equally with a Dual Core Processor. I don't have
equal pairs with my dual core and have no problems with it running. I would
contact HP and see if it is true that you would need to, but I don't think
you do. Depends on what type of RAM I guess....I remember when I used to
have the RDRAM in my system it had to be added in pairs, but they didn't
have to be equal....Just that you couldn't add just 1 stick. However, since
then I haven't heard anything about it needing to be paired or even equally
for that matter.

Hello Eric,

I've found back the article in the "Wikipedia" encyclopedia. The search
creteria is "Dual-channel architecture"
This article refers also to a paper edited by Kingston.

Your opinion is welcome.
