DVD maker video recording

I am trying to make a DVD video to send to family.
I have created all the clips successfully in WMV format using windows movie
maker.
I then made menus etc to make a decent looking DVD to send family some videos.
I am trying to record onto DVD R discs. THese work fine if I copy files for
back up using windows explorer.
when I try to creat the DVD, it goes through the encoding process, and once
completed (takes about 2hrs for 100mins of video), just as it starts
initialising the disk, it bombs out with just a message saying there was an
error with no further info.
I have tried using NERO instead, but still get an error. Since explorer
works OK on the same disks, it is clearly not a hardware / compatibility
problem. (the DVD writer is a LITEON 20X RW + RAM)
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Maybe the length of the video is an issue.

The general rule is 1 hour of video per
4.7 GB DVD, unless you have software
that will compress it to fit.

You're talking apples and oranges. Dragging and dropping files from
Explorer to a blank CD or DVD is VERY different than making a REAL DVD
if you are intending to be compliant so it plays anywhere, on your
computer, on another computer or perhaps more importantly on a
portable DVD player or a DVD player connected to your TV.

Are you using Microsoft's DVD Maker to finish your project? If so I'm
in the dark since it doesn't come with the Vista business version I
have. It supposedly takes the project files you make in Movie Maker
and should (lots of luck) covert them into a compliant movie. As
you've seen this newsgroup and countless forums are filled will people
saying it doesn't work well or at all for a whole host of reasons.

The length or amount of videos you can squeeze on a single sided DVD
depends on what bitrate you encode at. The size of the included files
is another matter. You can't exceed what will fit on a disc as far as
the sum of the files. Obviously whatever you're using to author/burn
the disc should be smart enough to know if or not a project will "fit"
before it starts or have an option to recompress to force it to fit.

I aim to get a hour twenty minutes give or take. If you encode at a
variable bitrate with max no higher than 6 MBPS which should still
give excellent quality should be able to get that much on, sometimes
more.

Re: DVD maker video recording

The problem I've been having is not with compliance once a disk is written.
When I try to burn the DVD the same make of DVD works fine to burn data, but
when I use windows DVD maker to try and burn, it gets as far a encoding and
then at 99%, when it is supposed to actually start writing the encoded fukes
to disk, it gives an error.

I thought it might be the type of DVD R disk I was using, but when I bought
new DVD +R disks, but still gives an error.

I suspect it is the device drivers, as when I check, VISTA shows the driver
as a CD driver rather than a DVD driver, even after trying to "update
drivers". I'll try removing it, deleting all the drivers, and then
re-connecting the DVD.

Hopefully that will work.

Re: DVD maker video recording

I myself have the problem. It gets all the way to 99% then bombs out. No
explanation other then it is a LITE ON DVD as well. Me thinks there is a
problem with our DVD Writers. Gonna try my laptop and let you know how it
turns on on that side..
