Re: Easy Transfer migration blocked by Spybot Search & Destroy
Why don't you two children take it offline? exchange im's and continue this
outside of the forum. i don't care to read this stuff; I just want eztransfer to stop hanging on my XP box. can either of you pause your mudslinging for a moment and assist? BTW, I have strong opinions about Spybot S&D, but I'm not going to state them for fear of getting hit by a mudball. Do what the OP did.... remove Spybot S&D. Then complain to MS and Spybot about the 'issue', providing all of the details you can. Personally, I'd ditch Spybot, clean the registry, and install AdAware SE Personal. (Not AdAware version 7.). > BTW, I have strong opinions about Spybot S&D, but I'm not going to state > them for fear of getting hit by a mudball. Re: Easy Transfer migration blocked by Spybot Search & Destroy
Just searching for some answers, Mr. Morgan. I didn't go looking 34 days
back just to insult people. Back on topic, now that my transfer completed (solved the XP box hang myself) do you have any idea how to cure the situation where all my folders on the Vista machine that transferred are "not accessible...access is denied"? I transferred the objects in the Geoff Stuart account to the new computer, which also has a Geoff Stuart account. Both are Administrators. Thanks if you can help. I despise VISTA and I have never used the automated tools for migrating anything. I burned my files onto data CDs and manually transferred them into the VISTA box (clean install, not an upgrade) in the office. No issues. VISTA is on one PC at the office and on one employee's laptop, and all of the PCs at my church (which I support). I had a clean install of VISTA Home Basic installed on a single PC for thirty days at home, unactivated, before I gave the OS away with a new computer build -- this after deciding that VISTA's background process complexity (along with a number of other OS intricacies that could not be shut down) along with it's ability to both assemble and report to MS, a highly accurate profile of the user and the complete state of the OS and the PC, wasn't my cup of tea just yet. A quick try would be turning off UAC, reboot and try accessing the files again. http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm Overview of UAC: http://technet2.microsoft.com/Window....mspx?mfr=true If you're a single-user PC owner, UAC is a heaping pile of horse feces, basically only for security issues in multi-user/single PC or heavily networked environments. It's of little to no value for a single user. I can't even simulate the issue for you because there is zero OEM software on any of the boxes I mentioned (except the church), as they are clean installs from VISTA DVDs. I will however, keep an eye on the threads you've started and if nothing comes up for you, try migrating a few things... (but I don't allow SpyBot on any of my systems, and we may not be configured similarly). Cheers... & sorry no joy today... DM |

Re: Easy Transfer migration blocked by Spybot Search & Destroy
David,
Well, you're gonna love this. I installed a little reg hack called Take Ownership (see http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=499870) which is supposed to allow me to recover full access to the selected file / directory, sub directories and their content after Easy Transfer takes it away. While I am not able to see the "Take Ownership" contect menu entry in the Elevated Command Prompt (what's that?), it did seem to eliminate the shortcuts to My Music, My Documents, etc. that previously I couldn't open. Most of my data is now accessible. I feel I've lost control of the upgrade in that I don't know where Easy Transfer was supposed to put things vs. what it actually did, so I'm just checking app-by-app and manually copying things when necessary. The security model in Vista differs from XP in ways I don't fully understand (and were not even hinted at on the Welcome screens). It will be a gradual learning process. I figured there was little to lose because I have not yet shifted over to the Vista box (Kaspersky is on order, I'm not risking exposing an unprotected machine to the Internet). I already reloaded it from the factory CD, so I can do that again if needed. Meanwhile the XP box chugs along for paying bills and doing my email. I did have more success with Easy Transfer Companion, a beta version that MS has made available. It transfers programs from one machine to another, which avoids doing installs, endless Internet updates, and option configurations. Unlike Easy Transfer, it worked like a charm, and even had explanations of what it was doing. Plus, it logs its activity and tells me what it could NOT accomplish. So far everything I've tried to run is working perfectly. So I'll keep you posted. I may not have to turn off UAC but will definitely read the article you suggested before I make up my mind. Yesterday I took a day off the computer hassles to finish grouting my kitchen backsplash to avoid a domestic disturbance. Thanks, Geoff "David Morgan (MAMS)" wrote: > > Any luck with no UAC ? > > > > > |

RE: Easy Transfer migration blocked by Spybot Search & Destroy
After viewing this I tried to uninstall Spybot. This is the message I got:
"The uninstall file c rograms/spybot-search&Destroy/unins000.dat" is in aformat not recognized by this version of the uninstaller. Cannot uninstall.
