best dvd ripping or converting software?

I just bought a dvd/vcr recorder so I can record my personal vhs tapes to
dvd. I want to transfer the dvds to my computer so I can edit and re-burn.
1)What is best disc type to use here - -RW or -R or something else? 2)What
is the best software to use to rip or convert the dvd into my computer,
ie:brands 3) What is the difference between ripping and converting?
Thanks for any help.
Joyce

Ok, +r or -r? it will according your dvd recorder. Some dvd recorder
supports both +r -r. Rip software, you can try avone video converter
(http://www.avonesoft.com). it can rip to mpeg or other format, and it
also can burn dvd.
