Re: Lost all folders

Kaspersky can also cause problems with Windows Mail, although
not as frequently as the big three troublemakers I mentioned below.
The only way to rule out Kaspersky as the possible culprit is to do a
temporary uninstall, then reboot and try Windows Mail again. If no
change, you can always reinstall Kaspersky.

What you describe sounds like just plain use error: moving the mouse while
clicking.

I thought that at first, which is why I turned off 'click-lock', but it
would not explain why, when I am half-way through checking that files and
folders are where they should be, the COLUMN HEADINGS and all the folders
except the Inbox disappear completely but reappear if I reboot in safe mode.

I have uninstalled Kaspersky, as suggested by Gary Vandermolen, and tried
turning off Defender, but it made no difference.

I re-installed Kaspersky as uninstalling it had made no difference to my
problems. All of these seem to have occurred when performing tasks that were
probably fairly memory intensive, such as copying data files from a USB key
and creating or reorganizing folders. As no problems were found in memory
diagnostic tests, I now wonder whether the real cause is the amount of memory
required to run Vista, itself. I have now tried shutting down all
non-essential programs, such as 'Side Bar' and this seems to have released a
considerable amount of RAM. My present laptop has 2GB of RAM.

Comments please.

Windows Mail has problems reading files from external drives or writing
files to external drives, so if this is part of the problem you may need to
arrange for an intermediate location of the files in some directory on your
main hard drive.

2 GB is plenty for Vista. That's not the problem. See Robert's post.

I was copying the contents of 'My Documents' from my old Windows 98 Desktop.
I have not even attempted to copy e-mail folders over, yet!

My e-mail folders on this machine are still 'losing' contents and column
headings today, but they always seem to re-appear on re-booting normally,
which is why I suspect memory problems! I also had another 'Blue Screen'
yesterday.

I am a retired IT professional and, among other things, I ran a help-desk
for my users. I used the old machine at home for seven years and another for
some time before that and have never seen problems like this either ar work
or at home!

You may want these instructions for moving the old email messages over,
if your old machine used Outlook Express:

<http://www.askmehelpdesk.com/email/import-dbx-files-outlook-express-windows-mail-vista-86458.html>

<http://www.vista4beginners.com/Migrate-from-Outlook-Express-to-Windows-Mail>

After you copy the files to a directory on the hard drive of your new
computer,
make sure the copies are read-write instead of readonly before you tell
Windows Mail to import the whole directory containing the copied files.
Make sure Windows Mail gets the directory name right; it often adds a
duplicate
of the last part of the directory name.

With respect, I don't think you have read what I wrote. At no time have I
been trying to import e-mail files. I have had similar problems with
'Document' folders as well as mail ones! The problem appears, however, to
affect mail folders more than the others. Vista appears to be unable to cope
with copying large numbers of files or creating or reorganizing large numbers
of folders.

This isn't the right newsgroup for discussing problems with importing
folders other than email folders. Try this one instead:
