Re: Vista is better than XP

Plug and Play you must be kidding me .. WIndows have never being a Plug and Pay.. Plug and Play - Play everything

Windows by default : -

1. No .pdf support
2. No Restricted Multimedia like xvid,rm support.
3. No games by default..
4. No Word Processor..
5. No High End Image Editor.
6. No 3d Rendering S/w.
7. +++ and the list goes on while there are few Linux which comes to provide everything from to tier 3d games. like QUake Wars , Nexuiz. and Full plug and play support..

Re: Vista is better than XP

Yes....you've got a point there Dark Star....and I know how much you like Linux then Windows..thats why I keep a copy of Linux installed on every of my machines....but since Windows holds more then 90% if the OS market....software companies, manufactures and even skools give and make more support for Microsoft OS's.....but if 1 day Linux does overtake Microsoft and their Windows based OS....I swear I will be dedicated to Linux from that day onwards.....!!!!

@Strider:..."Btw. A very good analysis Mathew. Keep it up".......
Thnx....I will update this thread oftenly when I make note of anything I did wrong or just a thread update!

@Baku: I know that using Vlite will strip out the drivers....but which files and folders do I strip out of the original Vista disc..???

@TCO: LOL.....have you tried to install Vista on your machine???

Yeah, true.

But for me the end user is a 60 year old retired school teacher or 75 year old cab driver who got an ancient machine and have just enough computer literacy to use the mouse and keyboard. Vista fails to impress them.

In my opinion the above scenario is true for Linux also. The first thing that should happen is a unified kernel which will ensure far better application support and multi platform compatibility. Then those endless distributions which seems surpasses the total number of linux users. (j/k) .

Linux shares look a bit too high.

Windows has dropped from what it used to be in 2004~2005, but still above the 90%. Mac has more market shares than Linux (with all distros added)

Re: Vista is better than XP

@DS: I meant Plug-And-Play for hardware. That's what plug and play means... buy a USB flash drive and it will say plug and play on the box. That doesn't mean you can open PDF files right from the flash drive. I know that it doesn't come with that kind of support, but compare Vista to Ubuntu Hardy Heron. Vista will 99.999% have drivers pre installed for hardware. In Ubuntu 8.04, I installed it and had to hunt for drivers. I finally got the wireless working, but I still haven't gotten audio working.
PS: If you know how, my computer is a Dell Inspiron E1505 Thanks

Re: Vista is better than XP

Hmm, well I got ndiswrapper to integrate itself with a Windows format driver (.exe) via alot of bash commands. First I extracted the EXE file and I told what drivers are used for Wireless. Is there anything like that with audio though. And my problem is very weird... what happens is that I am able to hear sound perfectly by default, but that annoying beeping sound sometimes happens anyways. It's like it doesn't know that it has a driver, but it does. So yeah, is there anyway to tell it to shut up because it has a diver? Thanks

Re: Vista is better than XP

Well after 6hrs of search for a Linux compatible driver for that integrated sound solution..I'm afraid none exist...you might want to email Dell of them making one for you..I mean they have Ubuntu in dual boot in most of their new systems now...so they should provide a Ubuntu compatible driver for your laptop...and also....when you said that the sound works but beeping etc....what do you mean by that? More details...and also does the sound work properly and clearly in your XP?? And is your Sound drivers and other drivers up to date?

If not~~~~~
Heres the download link:

I hope it fixed some other problems too!

P.S. Still looking a way to get that sound working in Ubuntu!
