On 9/14/07 I noticed that the volume control slider would not stay up. The
slider has a dash-mark outline around the control. When the slider is moved
up the volume comes on but then the slider falls right back down and the
volume is lost. Also, spell check features in Office programs are grayed out
so the spell check will not work (word suggestions are visible but grayed out
too).

The last update installed prior to these problems starting was KB890830 on
9/12. I tried to uninstall but it is not showing up in Add/Remove Programs
or in the Windows Directory (but the Microsoft site says it was successfully
installed). System Restore did not work either and I tried several dates
going back as far as 9/1. Also tried: Changing users,
uninstalling/reinstalling SoundMax and adjusting the properties of spelling &
grammar.

Any help is appreciated.

KB890830 is the update to the Malicious Software Removal Tool. Unless
the Sound Max drivers were erroneously detected as malware or, were in
fact infected, then the updated MRT should have nothing to do with this
issue.
Open the mrt.log to find out what, if anything, was detected.

To check the log, copy & paste the below into the Open: line from
Start > Run

%windir%\debug\mrt.log
Click OK or press Enter

Scroll down to the bottom of the log for the most recent entry.
If an 'infection' was found the log will state so.

No infection was found, or ever has been according to the log. So it wasn't

time they were disabled. Could the hotel internet access have messed things
up?

Was it a wireless connection ? If so, then some 'thing' may have taken
up residence on your
system. Has the system been scanned for unwanted 'visitors' with an
updated antivirus program since then ?

Since this is September 25th, why don't you see if there is a System
Restore Point created just before the 14th, when this odd behavior
started occurring and utilize that ?

Wireless and DSL were both used over the course of the trip. A full system
scan has been run since then using Norton Internet Security 2007 and Windows
Defender. System Restore has been run several times, each time using a
different restore point, one going back as far as 9/1. No luck yet.

The laptop was booted up in safe mode this morning and the spell check was
working fine in the Office applications. There was no sound device showing
up in the control panel.

I rebooted in regular mode and was about to uninstall / reinstall SoundMax
(again) when I noticed the spell check and volume control are working fine
now. Any explanations? Thanks again for your help.

Suggest that the next time MRT is updated, which will occur the second
Tuesday of October, you temporarily disable NIS from RealTime monitoring
of the system prior to the download and scan of MRT.
Since booting to Safe Mode seemed to resolve the issue, then it *may*
indicate that NIS was the cause.

Also, to avoid future issues when updating the OS, please see this:

Virus scanning recommendations for computers that are running Windows
Server 2003, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822158

Suggest you create a Restore Point now while the system is functioning
the way *you* prefer. If the sound/spell check issue occurs again, use
that Restore Point to mitigate them.

Well the volume control and spell check worked correctly for about 6 months.
Over the last two months they have worked sporadically. Right now the volume
control slider won't stay "up"and the spell check is grayed out. The system
restore point I created last time I thought this was fixed (9/07) is missing.
None of the restore points in May will restore and none of the other
asjustments I tried last time have worked.

Any ideas?
