Anti Virus
I have been told that Avast, AVG or Antivir are good free anti virus
programmes. Which do members think is the best option. They all happen to be free But I am told that they are all very good and compare favourably with the brand leaders. By the way I am quite happy to buy a programme and would welcome suggestions. |

Re: Anti Virus
I've been running Windows OneCare on three different
computers for over two years now. No viruses, no spyware, and no malware has entered any of my PCs using OneCare. Re: Anti Virus
Either one is good, I personally wouldn't pay for one while these free
options are still available. As long as you stay away from Norton and Mcafee you'll be fine. -- ---- Crosspost, do not multipost http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm How to ask a question http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555375 How to Post http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm __________________________________________________ _______________________________ "Magnum" <Magnum@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:65A44696-7D2B-4721-B462-2B668E3EC87C@microsoft.com... >I have been told that Avast, AVG or Antivir are good free anti virus > programmes. Magnum Try posting in an appropriate discussion group i.e. http://www.microsoft.com/communities...&lang=en&cr=US Your question is a bit like 'how long is a piece of string'? Some free are brand leaders You could get a different recommendation with each reply, which will tell you nothing. Search within the correct group, Google, read reviews etc. When you have done that make up your own mind. I will however tell you what most say you should NEVER use - Norton & McAfee. Antioch |

I've used AVG for some time and haven't been stung yet. |

Re: Anti Virus
I use AVG Free, and it seems fine (better than Norton or McAfee, IMHO) as
long as you remember to update it manually. It took me a while to find it. Go to the Control Center - View - and make sure there are checkmarks on all the components. I kinda like extended mode. Highlight 'Scheduler' in the main screen. At the bottom of the screen - Select 'Scheduled Tasks' and take it from there. |

I use Norton AV as part of System Works, and have for about 6 years now. As an AV program, it works splendidly - I have never once been infected with a virus while using it, but I have lost count of the number of times it has stopped a virus, worm or Trojan *inbound* to my computer. It also updates seamlessly and silently - you aren't even aware it was updating until a little box momentarily appears telling you it did. That said: It does - no question in my mind - slow down you machine, especially boot. It has a few useful features other than the AV, and a number of "bloatware" features, too. I am currently studying up on Avast - if I feel I can trust it to the extent I can Norton, I may well go to that, soon. As for McAfee, I have to agree - putting up with McAfee's way of doing things is almost not worth being safe from virus - almost. I would advise avoiding McAfee too. I used it for several years, and got disgusted with it's ever-bloating approach in successive versions. Wife still uses it - and hates it - she is going to get something else, too.
