Mort

Using Media Player 11 with XP SP2.

Every time I click on a .wmv link in an email, Windows Media Player
loads the video clip and begins to play it. Then, after a second or two
it switches to a blue screen with white (DOS) lettering. This flashes on
the screen for a brief moment (no time to read anything) and reboots the
computer.

Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel lists the following programs:

Windows Media Format 11 Runtime
Windows Media Player 11
Security Update for Windows Media Player 6.4 (KB925398)
Hotfix for Windows Media Format 11 SDK (KB929399)
Security Update for Windows Media Player 11 (KB936782)
Hotfix for Windows Media Player 11 (KB939683)

Is there a problem with Media Player 11?
Can I delete this program and go back to version 9? I never had a
problem with this version.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

are u able to play video and audio files using wmp 11. if yes, then maybe the
link which u r trying to open might have some problem.

To read the Blue Screen error message:
Go to Control Panel | [if using Category view, click Performance and
Maintenance, then...] | System | Advanced tab | Startup and Recovery
"Settings" button | System Failure section, and UNcheck the "Automatically
Restart" box.

Thank you for your quick response. The problem doesn't seem to be with
the link because it occurs with 3 different links in emails.
Tried Script's suggestion and the Blue Screen had the following information:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

At the bottom of the screen, the following appeared:

*** STOP: 0x0000000A (0x00000016, 0x0000001C, 0x00000000, 0x804E1745)
Beginning Dump of Physical Memory.

This is a relatively new computer. Until recently Media Player seemed to
work OK. No new hardware has been installed. Is it possible that some
other program (like itunes or Quicktime) is messing me up?

If I want to reinstall Media Player, which of the files in Add/Remove
Programs should be deleted first?

i have the same problem. not just with video sent thru e-mail but other
video files on my system can crash media player 11 and automatically reboot.
i tried to go back to version 10 but succumbed to 11. it is very frustrating,
i even tried saving the video file to the desktop and playing it from there
and that helped some but other videos i already have will do the same thing.
it seems as if video files (especially .avi) make media player 11 unstable.
has anyone found a solution or should i just use a different player?
