dual boot with WinXP Pro as both OS's
My intention is to config my laptop for work with 2 completely different
domains/companies. If someone could point me to one or more good docs/links that would be great. Some general questions: - First, I'm assuming that I can have two installs of WinXP on the same machine: am I right? - Do I need 2 different volumes? - Can I use the same CD for both installs? - Do I install Office2003 twice? If yes, can I use the same CD? - Can I share files/folders (e.g., a singe My Documents) between the two OS's? Thanks very, very much! |

My suggestion - if you are intending on just using domain-shared resources - there is no practical reason (unless they have configured it so only domain PCs have access to their resources - which is unlikely) for you to join either domain. All you need is proper user credentials and even simple batch scripts could map any domain resource you could possibly want to use at one site or the other. - You could dual boot two Windows XP Professionals on one machine - yes. - You do not need two different partitions - although it may help and/or may be required by the companies for which you are doing this for - if it is even necessary at all. - You can use the same CD - but in accordance with the EULA - I believe you will need two licenses (two product keys maybe.) - You will need to install Office 2003 on each install - yes. You can use the same CD - the licensing may even allow for this for Office. - Yes. Essentially you could have a place where 'everyone' has access to it on the drive - or perhaps a partition set aside like this. I still think you are better off not joining either domain, however. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

Re: dual boot with WinXP Pro as both OS's
Unfortunately, for a few reasons that I cannot control, I have to haul 2
laptops around the country or come up with a suitable dual-boot sort of set up. Do you know of a good link/doc that gives me the step by step? Thanks for your help! Hi,
For multi booting I would recommend BootIt Next Generation & Image for Windows. http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ You will want to read these two pages first. Dual Boot in Windows XP http://bertk.mvps.org/html/dualbootxp.html Dual Booting Windows Vista & Windows XP: http://bertk.mvps.org/html/dualboot.html Regards, Bert Kinney MS-MVP Shell/User http://bertk.mvps.org Member: http://dts-l.org TBW wrote: > My intention is to config my laptop for work with 2 completely different > domains/companies.
