Generic Host Process for Win32 Services

Using XP Pro with SP2

When I reboot I've been getting an error message that says

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

and when I click on "more information" I see

szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : wuaueng.dll
szModVer : 7.0.6000.381 offset : 000c7ab2

I googled this and found a fix that worked for some people--didn't for me.

Tried doing windows update and couldn't get it to work, then found out the
win32 services thing is related to that.

(We also suddenly apparently have "no audio device" although the sound card
is shown as working properly but I have no idea if that's related, and I
think the WIN32 thing is more urgent.)

I'd appreciate any assistance.

Thanks,

Maggie
