Windows unstable/crashes but very few clues to go on
Hello
I've Windows XP which has become unstable. I've tried many things to find out why (inlcuding loooking for spyware and trojans of course) but with no success. The only clues I have is that 'active desktop' suddenly got activated after being turned off for about 5 years and kept reactivating itself. I finally managed to find two files that it wanted to incorporate in the office desktop (they didn't actually show up on the desk and I couldn't see them in the temp files where they were supposed to be) They are now out of the register but the system still hangs inspite of being boosted with a second memory stick When I open a couple of windows or do sth quite minor like send emails or use two Word documents, the mouse (wireless) becomes sluggish and sometimes the system freezes. If it doesn't crash and 'recovers' , I immediately go to the process window but nothing unusual is running and the processor is more or less idle. It's sluggish as I am typing this email. Please can anyone help |

If the problem persists, physically disconnect the machine from the Internet, then disable every startup task and also every non-Microsoft service. Does this resolve the problem? |

Re: Windows unstable/crashes but very few clues to go on
The first culprit I would go after based upon what you are saying would be
the Virtual Memory settings (Page File). Active Desktop is a resource hog and even with enough memory it is a hog. Turn off any Office deskop toolbars, they are resource hogs. Eliminate excess applications running in the system tray as well. Set your Page File at least 1.5 times the size of your RAM minimum and 3 times the size of your RAM maximum. Turn of the Themes Service and try using Windows Classic to see if that helps with eh Active Desktop issue, if you choose certain formats or AD apps, for your desktop, AD will automatically come on. See if that all helps. -- marx404 _________________ "Dave Neve" <NoAddressForSpammers@noway.fr> wrote in message news:OrtRuafqIHA.4716@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > Hello > > I've Windows XP which has become unstable. > > I've tried many things to find out why (inlcuding loooking for spyware and > trojans of course) but with no success. > > The only clues I have is that 'active desktop' suddenly got activated > after > being turned off for about 5 years and kept reactivating itself. > > I finally managed to find two files that it wanted to incorporate in the > office desktop (they didn't actually show up on the desk and I couldn't > see > them in the temp files where they were supposed to be) > > They are now out of the register but the system still hangs inspite of > being > boosted with a second memory stick > > When I open a couple of windows or do sth quite minor like send emails or > use two Word documents, the mouse (wireless) becomes sluggish and > sometimes > the system freezes. > > If it doesn't crash and 'recovers' , I immediately go to the process > window > but nothing unusual is running and the processor is more or less idle. > > It's sluggish as I am typing this email. > > Please can anyone help > > > |

I have been seeing more and more of this type of issue over the past few
days, I believe it may be malware related, some new variant. Go to my website download and run Remove-it, What's Live RN and Explorer shell fix tool. Email me a copy of the log file created by What's live RN. http://pcbutts1.com/downloads/tools/tools.htm -- Newsgroup Trolls. Read about mine here http://www.pcbutts1.com/downloads The list grows. Re: Windows unstable/crashes but very few clues to go on
Thanks everyone
There are some 'heavy'suggestions here that will take me time to do I will have to wait for the holidays cos as far as work is concerned , a lame XP is better than a dead XP for me I was actually hoping to limp along until the summer holidays but I'm not sure that I can make it. In article <OhGRj.12473$GE1.10266@nlpi061.nbdc.sbc.com>, pcbutts1
@leythosthestalker.com says... > Email me a copy of the log file created by What's live RN Are you still trying to get people to visit the website you created and hosted ****ographic materials on? Do you really think that anyone would trust someone that creates and spreads filth around like you do? -- Leythos - spam999free@rrohio.com (remove 999 to email me) Fight exposing kids to ****, complain about sites like PCBUTTS 1.COM that create filth and put it on the web for any kid to see: Just take a look at some of the FILTH he's created and put on his website: http://forums.speedguide.net/archive.../t-223485.html all exposed to children (the link I've include does not directly display his filth). You can find the same information by googling for 'PCBUTTS1' and 'exposed to kids'. |
