Don't know which sound card I have
Good morning. Can someone tell me how I might find out which sound card I
have? I have a Dell pc & according to them I have an Audio Software Integrated Soundblaster & with the pc they supplied an Audigy Advanced MB cd. I recently needed to reinstall windows & despite installing the drivers from the Dell Drivers disk I still needed (according to Found New Hardware} software for an IDT High Definition Codec. The Audigy Cd when I tried to run it told me that it could not find any supported hardware & I get the same result when I try to install Creative soundblaster drivers. I've looked inside the case & can't see which onboard sound card I have. Is there perhaps a diagnostic program that could tell me please? Macc |

Check the Dell Support site for updated drivers for your exact make/model PC
and download/install them per their instructions. If you want to know what any of the software/hardware that came with your PC, use the Service Tag number on the PC to look it up. You could also use one if these apps to find out just about anything about your PC. Belarc Advisor Everest Home Edition: (Last one offered free) System Information for Windows -- Brian A. Sesko { MS MVP_Windows Desktop User Experience } Conflicts start where information lacks. Suggested posting do's/don'ts: How to ask a question: "Macc" <> wrote in message news:... > Good morning. Re: Don't know which sound card I have
Thank you Brian. I had already checked the dell Site using my service tag;
unfortunately it is not as helpful as it could be in that many of the drivers don't seem to apply to my system. Even the original system configuration is sparse in it's information. With the help of the Dell support ng I've obtained all the drivers I need except for Audio. Dell say that I have an integrated SoundBlaster Card & I do have creative programs running. However none of the creative drivers either from the Dell site or creative's own site seem to install & the only driver I've managed to install is Sigmatel one. I have taken your advice & installed Belarc Advisor & it suggests that I have SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC, but is that because of the driver I installed? The problem I have atm is that when windows starts I get an error message that sttray.exe - Entry Point Not Found. The procedure entry point LocalizeString could not be located in the dynamic link library STLang.dll. which Nepatsfan on this ng suggested that Sttray.exe is the Sigmatel Audio system tray application. and that I could try reinstalling the software that came with your sound card. If I have on-board audio. check the CD that came with my motherboard or the manufacturer's web site for the latest drivers. That's my problem I don't actually know what card I've got & none of the sofware I got from Dell seems to help. I do have a cd for the chipset drivers but these have already been installed & I believe that I should install the chipset software BEFORE any other. Macc. Please ignore last sentence about chipset drivers - it's meaningless - a
senior moment :-) Macc "Macc" <> wrote in message news:... > Thank you Brian. Re: Don't know which sound card I have
The sttray.exe is the system tray file for SigmaTel.

Integrated components, such as the audio controller, often will not work properly until the chipset drivers have been installed. Anyways, you can find everything you need in either the manual and disks that came with the computer, or on Dell's Support web site. -- Bruce Chambers Help us help you: They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. ~Benjamin Franklin Many people would rather die than think; in fact, most do. ~Bertrand Russell The philosopher has never killed any priests, whereas the priest has killed a great many philosophers. ~ Denis Diderot |

Re: Don't know which sound card I have
Thank you, again, Brian.
I have uninstalled the Sigmatel Drivers My PC is A Dell Dimension 9200 although Belarc reports it as a Dell DXP061. The Service Tag 98FKJ2J confirms it as a Dimension 9200 The Motherboard is Dell OWG855 The Chipset is an Intel P965/G965 Memory Controller Hood I don't know what audio adapter I have - Dell describe it as an "Audi Software Integrated Soundblaster" however looking inside the case I can find nothing to indicate the manufacturer - where would I find this on either the Belarc or SIW reports please? Thank you Bruce. I had installed the drivers that came on the drivers disk from Dell & had also installed the drivers from their website using my service tag. I have reinstalled the chipset drivers from the website also. I'm going to leave things as they are now as everything works apart from an error message about an audio program's system tray which I can live with. Thank you everybody for your assistance. Macc |
