Windows Explorer Keyboard Navigation
Ok, so my old login profile got corrupted, and I made a new one and copied over what I could from the old profile. I've had to fix a lot of settings, but one I can't seem to fix is for Windows Explorer. Before, whenever I opened an explorer window (say, My Computer for example) the file browser would be selected by default and I could type to navigate immediately (I could type L for Local Hard drive, or M for My Documents). But now, I have to click on the file area of the window to select it first before I can navigate by typing like that. Does anyone know how to fix this? -- Seilen |

What happen when you type L or M now, any result at all or it just sits
there and does nothing? JS "Seilen" <> wrote in message news:... > > Ok, so my old login profile got corrupted, and I made a new one and > copied over what I could from the old profile. Yes it just sits and does nothing. I have to select the filepane before I can type to navigate -- Seilen |

Re: Windows Explorer Keyboard Navigation
I just switched my ISP to Verizon FIOS and they have effectively hijacked
Windows Explorer: In effect if I type D: it will go to the root of my D drive. However if I type just the letter D without the colon ( it goes to aVerizon/Yahoo web search site. So I can't duplicate your problem. Sorry, but I'll keep looking JS "Seilen" <> wrote in message news:... > > Yes it just sits and does nothing. Re: Windows Explorer Keyboard Navigation
By that explanation I think you're misunderstanding. I'm not typing anything in the address bar, I'm typing in the filepane to select a folder or a file. Like if I'm in C:\Program Files\ and type "moz" it selects the folder Mozilla Firefox, and then I press enter to open the folder. And then I can immediately type "P" and it will select the Plugins folder, and I can hit enter again to open that folder. So using this method I could quickly navigate to any particular folder. For example, I would do: Open My Computer > type C > Enter > type pro > Enter > type mir > Enter > type down > Enter - and this would take me to the folder C:\Program Files\mIRC\downloads\ My problem is that I used to be able to do this immediately, but now everytime I open a folder, either by double-clicking or pressing Enter, I have to click on the filepane before I can type. So taking the above example, it now has to be done like this: Open My Computer > Click filepane > type C > Enter > Click filepane > type pro > Enter > Click filepane > type mir > Enter > Click filepane > type down > Enter - to get to C:\Program Files\mIRC\downloads\. This is really frustrating because it severely slowsdown my navigation time and forces me to either use the TAB key like nuts or move off the keyboard and use my mouse. I hope that clears up my problem a little bit better. -- Seilen |

That doesn't fix my problem. Doubleclick or singleclick is not the issue here. -- Seilen |

Internet Options has an feature under Advanced tab, "Search from the Address bar", where you can select "Display the results and go to the most likely site", "Just go to the most likely site", and two other selections. One of those might work; many IE features also work within Explorer. -- Joe =o) |

Re: Windows Explorer Keyboard Navigation
Hi Seilen
I'm not sure from your description whether you are using a single or double-pane view of Explorer, but it sounds as if it's a focus problem. Try starting Explorer from a shortcut with this in the Target field: "C:\windows\explorer.exe" /n,/e,/select, C: This should give you the usual double-pane window with the tree in the left and drive C: highlighted in the right. On my computer, after pressing Enter to open C:, the highlight shows (faded) on the left "tree" side, but pressing any letter key will take me down the right pane to the first folder beginning with that character. Does this help at all? -- Nightowl Seilen <> wrote on Sat, 21 Jun 2008: >By that explanation I think you're misunderstanding. Re: Windows Explorer Keyboard Navigation
Ok, this works but only for the first window. It has the filepane selected properly with that /select C: command, but after I enter C:, it goes back to not having the filepane selected again. -- Seilen |
