Intellimouse optical middle button problems

Hello,
I can't get my Intellimouse optical's middle button to work as a double
click. I'm on XP pro sp2.
I have Intellipoint version 5.4 installed.

I would like to have version 4.12 installed (for VB 6 scroll support) but it
doesn't make the middle button work as a double click either. When I open
the Mouse setup dialog, it shows that the middle button is set to scroll and
double click but the double clicking doesn't work...

Anybody have any ideas about this?

Isn't 6.1 the latest mouseware for these items?

One of my computers does this occasionally. I have learned to open the
mouse settings, change the middle click to something else, apply and
save. Then I re open it and change it back to double click, apply, and
save. This restores the double click for a month or so. A crude fix
for a crude program. My other three computers have Logitech mice and
use the Logitech setpoint program and never do this.
