Can't delete over 200,000 files

I am runing XP Home with all the updates. Recenly, I noticed that
my antivirus and spyware programs are scanning about 200,000 extra
files, and taking much longer to scan. For instance, the antivirus now
takes 3 hours, rather than the previous 42 minutes.

Most of the time is spent scanning "Compaq_Owner/Documents and
Settings/Local Setting/Temporary Internet Files ie5. I can't find any
such folder. When I go to the "Temporary Internet Files", and delete
all but cookies, I then see about 60 files. But when I check on
"Properties" for the filder, it says that I have 201,000 files in four
folders. I can't find them. Using IE6/tools/delete temporary files
doesn't help either. I have selected "Show hidden files" in the My
Computer file options.

Can anyone help me to explain and solve this problem? Thanks.

What can I do to find and delete these files.

Run disk cleanup and Defrag in safe mode, then scan from another vendors to
see if your Guard is a wake or a sleep?.
Download this tool it will help you clean up the junk:

Please read the help file for the Crap cleaner to get the best out of it as
it can hurt you if you deleted a file you shouldn't.
Also you can download the Process Explorer and FileMon to monitor in real
time what running in the background:
Download the FileMon to see the Running Processes in realtime from here:

Or Process Explorer :

In IE go to Tools | Internet Options and delete your Temporary Internet
Files. Then reduce the size to 50 MB.

Re: Can't delete over 200,000 files

In windows explorer, tools, folder options, view.

Then, scroll down to hidden files and folders and click show hidden files
and folders.

Also, uncheck hide protected operating system files, at least temporarily.

Click OK.

Hopefully you will now be able to see "Compaq_Owner/Documents and
Settings/Local Setting/Temporary Internet Files ie5"/

By the way, it is more likely the path is somehting like "C:\Documents and
Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Setting\Temporary Internet Files\..."

Re: Can't delete over 200,000 files

I did exactly as you suggested. After I deleted the files, I then
limited the amount to 50MB. Then, when I used Windows Esplorer, and
went to Temportary Internet Files "properties", I got 223,000 files,
27 folders, "size" of 1 gig, and "Disk size" of 1.59 gigs. Of course
all of the files are still not visible. In "My Computers, I have
chosen to "show hidden files" and also "Show protected hidden files
ins unchecked". I believe that when the antivirus runs (and also the
spyware elimintor) they spend their time in a subfolder called
"Temporary Internet FilesIE5. No such folder appears in Windows
Explorer. Where are these files???

Re: Can't delete over 200,000 files

One more thing. I am now running my antivirus protram, and find that
most the "mysterious" files in this folder have the extension (.asmx".
Is this helpful?

Re: Can't delete over 200,000 files

I came upon this website blog that may also be helpful, but I don't
understand a word of it:

Re: Can't delete over 200,000 files

I am deleting from the IE6 Tools menu. I suppose that that is IE's
tool. Did you get my response that almost all of these files are .asmx
files?

Have you deleted the contents of this folder?

C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Ownner\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

This folder will not be visible from your account even when
you've configured XP to show all hidden files and folders. To
view this folder, do the following;

Open your Temporary Internet Files folder.
Click in the address bar at the top of the window so the path
to that folder is highlighted.
Hit the right arrow key on your keyboard.
Enter the following next to Temporary Internet Files in the
address bar.

\Content.IE5

Hit the Enter key.
Delete all of the subfolders you find in the Content.IE5
folder.

Good luck
