HELP! F2 shortcut key to rename file/folder no longer working in XP Pro. Settings issue or keylogger infection?
In Windows I have always been able to click on a file or folder in
Explorer and press F2 and it would immediately go into Rename mode. Not only is this a great convenience for renaming files, more importantly you can press CTRL-C to copy the filename to the clipboard (if you want you can then click on the address bar at the top of the window, press END, type backslash and CTRL-V paste in the name, press SHIFT-HOME and CTRL-C and you have the file's entire name/path in the clipboard). It's a very convenient/fast way to get file names/paths into the clipboard, particularly if you are into keyboard shortcuts like I am (much faster than the mouse) and like to use START>RUN (press Windows key then R then CTRL-V) to open windows or files. Anyway, in the past day or so, F2 no longer is working in Explorer to rename a file. The only way to go into rename mode is to click the file and wait a second (very annoying). More importantly I am wondering if this is a symptom that I have been infected with a keylogger. Any suggestions or advice on how to reactivate F2 (and more importantly flush out any keyloggers!) would be most appreciated! |

No, because I hadn't made any changes to my system or installed any
new programs. Someone suggested that the problem may be Filter Keys, a potentially annoying feature in XP and Vista (see links below). Anyhow, the problem went away later that day. Maybe there was some Windows update or something running in the background that was messing up the keyboard. XP's filter keys Joho the Blog: Turning off filterkeys Turn off Filter Keys in Windows XP and Vista Help! My Shift key is stuck! - Ask Leo! JesusH » How to Turn Off StickyKeys / Filterkeys in Windows XP ... Stupid Windows Features - Disable FilterKeys Permanently Control Panel >> Accessibility Options >> Remove all check-marks But wait, there's more! That isn't enough to get rid of FilterKeys, you also have to go to the Settings sub-menu and remove the check- marks there. Hit OK twice and you're finally rid of the damned thing. Or, maybe you have one of those keyboards that turns the function keys
into i-am-a-dummy-do-it-for-me keys unless you have Fn Lock on? wrote in news:1187189906.932728.228300@w3g2000hsg.googlegro ups.com: > No, because I hadn't made any changes to my system or installed any > new programs. You know what - I never noticed that key on this keyboard but come to think of it you're right. Maybe I hit that by mistake, it's right next to Backspace... What is the purpose of F Lock??? Thanks...
