I have a bootable CD to access my daughter documents which I was able to copy
to floppies.
I can't load the OEM Windows XP software or the SP2 Software.
When running the Active Boot Disk I run out of Memory fast. I show only 220
KB of memory. Is thaT MY PROBLEM?

Also the VGAOEM.FON file is misssing. I can't copy it to the folder for
some reason.

I need to diagnose my computer to find out what the hell is going on.

Can anyone help?

Question

Yesterday she comes to me and say's it won't work.

I started it up and it say's it has a
"missing or corrupt file windows\system32\vgaoem.fon" and would I like to
repair it using the original install CD.
Ok I tried that and it won't work. Yes, I went into the Bios and set CD to
start at boot. It would boot up and then give me an error beep and return to
the original error just described.
I downloaded the 6 setup disks and used them to start up the system and got
"missing or corrupt bios??.inf". Would you like to exit and restart?"

(?? = I forgot the filename)

All I want to do is access the A:drive in a DOS Environment, then Access the
c: root, then get my daughters homework off.

Please Help. I have now spent over 6 hrs working on this issue before
bugging you guys so now I'm desparate and don't want to turn it over to the
geek squad just yet.

Try tapping the F8 key on starting pc,select safe mode,enter xp as
administrator,
get the files...Or,power off pc (unplug),locate the CMOS jumper pin,usually
by
battery,remove battery,move the CMOS pin from 1-2 to 2-3 for .45 seconds or
so,then back to 1-2,replace battery,start pc.On start -up,you'll need to
reset basic
BIOS settings (date/time,etc),load optimal defaults,then reset BIOS for
add-ons,
save & exit.

www.bootdisk.com has some utilities to assist in recovering files
or
remove the hd, connect as slave or via enclosure to another PC to recover
files

What is the history of the operating system on the computer since new?
When was the computer new? What is the computer make and model?

I told you last week this is a problem many users have found difficult
to resolve, such that it is difficult to find a report where a solution
was found.

Thanks, I tried the Activedisk© but when I started to use it I found
that the machine would run out of memory. Checking taskman. I was unable to
copy the font file vgaoem, don't know why.

I have a 6 gig I use for backup. I'll try to hook up the suspect drive in
its place.

Hi,

Sorry about not replying sooner. I will do my best to give you some info.
The OS is Windows XP Pro SR2 and it has been on this computer since. I was
a custom build from an IT guy I knew a while ago. It is a Intel P4 3GHz
system and a 60 GIG HD. I will have to get the box out of my daughters room
and crack it open. I have a memory test on CD to check the system memory.
If that turns out it maybe the HArd drive. I hope not.

This appears to be a fairly common problem and noone seems to have an answer.

This error occurred to me right after using House Trend Micro (report was
clean) and then I started using Microsoft Excel. I received a notice for a
Microsoft update. I clicked OK, the update was done, I saved my Excel work,
and rebooted. Upon reboot, I received this identical vgaoem.fon
missing/corrupt error. I tried Windows Recovery with no success. Using my
2nd PC, I went online to Google a solution. Some were saying faulty hard
drive.

So I took out my hard drive from PC #1 with the vgaoem.fon missing/corrupt
error and slaved it to PC #2. Hard drive from PC#1 is 100% functional, so
the hard drive was not the problem. With that said, I pulled off all my
saved files and my program files from PC#1's hard drive and transferred over
to PC#2.

I put PC#1 harddrive into PC#1 and still cannot reinstall the vgaoem.fon -
but I did manage to get it limping along and as it proceeded forward,
Windows kept deleting all of my .fon files. Every one of them.

So either there's a bug in Microsoft's Update software or an undetected
virus/trojan hit my PC in 2 minutes (HIGHLY unlikely).

From this day forward, there will be no more Microsoft XP updates for me.

I have yet to find a fix...so if you ever have this problem, your hard drive
will never function as primary again - but you can use it as a slave.

What is your computer make and model?

What exactly is Windows XP CD? Has the system been upgraded from Windows
98 to Windows XP?

Please post copy of the Error Report as it appears in Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.
