Mapped Network Drive cannot be created
I am trying to map a network drive, but I keep getting this message at the
last mapping step: The Mapped Network Drive could not be created - The Network Location cannot be reached. All services seem to be ok, I'm logged on as Admin, I can see the drives, just not ACCESS them! Any ideas as to why? Where should I look to get connected? One PC in the workgroup is XPPro, two are XP HOME EDITION. It's the XP Pro that can't connect. Thanks! |

FloidFrak,
Can you browse to the folders you are trying to map to? -- Newbie Coder (It's just a name) "floidfreek" <> wrote in message news:... > I am trying to map a network drive, but I keep getting this message at the > last mapping step: > The Mapped Network Drive could not be created - The Network Location cannot > be reached. > > All services seem to be ok, I'm logged on as Admin, I can see the drives, > just not ACCESS them! Is Simple File Sharing disabled in the Pro machine? Explorer > Menu bar Tools > Folder Options > View tab. Last item in list. Is the drive(s) set to Everyone share? You really shouldn't share entire drives, it's much safer to only share sub directories/folders. Is a software firewall blocking access to F&P Sharing? Is a software firewall blocking the Pro IP? Is the Pros connection status set to show in the Notification Area ( aka systray) shown as two monitors? If yes: Right click the icon in the NA. Click Change Windows Firewall Settings in the popup menu. Select to Start Windows Firewall. Can you ping the Pro by both IP and Name? Open a command prompt and ping each computer from the other using the UNC: =ping ^ computername If it fails either way there's an IP or Name resolution problem. Change the computername to the IP to ping by IP. Can you ping the loopback address? ping 127.0.0.1 If it fails it may be a TCP/IP stack problem Can the Pro ping the router or domains? =ping ^ 192.168.1.1 *Routers IP, change as necessary. If it times out then there is no communication between the router and machine. If not then the machine communicates with the router. =ping ^ google.com If it times out then there is no connection to the net. If not then net connection is established and all is well. -- Brian A. XP PRO defaults to WORKGROUP workgroup. XP HOME defaults to MSHOME workgroup. Must be the same, workgroup, user, password and sharing must be set up for the folders. |
